Kundalini Awakening, Kundalini Yoga, & Kundalini Activations

In 2023 I had a week long life changing kundalini awakening. I experienced many symptoms that were atypical compared to other people’s experiences, and others that would be considered extremely unfamiliar.

Since that experience, the energy has continued to unfold in my life in a beautiful and grounding way. I have gained more confidence, changed careers into something more aligned, and healed my relationships, to name a few.

Before going further, I want to define what kundalini energy is

Kundalini Energy

Kundalini energy was first written about in very ancient yogic texts. The energy is an evolutionary force that moves through your chakra system bringing your psyche into conscious awareness of the fullness of self.  It does not simply remove energy but makes it conscious for you to decide what to do.

My Kundalini Yoga teacher, Gloria Latham taught that having a kundalini awakening is a decision between you and your soul before incarnating. This may help explain why some people practice for years without a major energetic awakening, while others experience spontaneous activation without any prior knowledge of it.

From my own experience, this energy feels like it comes from within. It is intelligent, responsive, and deeply subjective in how it expresses itself through each individual.

What Is Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini yoga is a yogic practice that incorporates knowledge of kundalini energy moving through the chakra system. The intention of kundalini yoga is to support the practitioner in elevating consciousness through breathwork, movement, meditation, and nervous system regulation.

I am a kundalini yoga instructor, and in my experience, this practice helped my body prepare for and integrate the massive influx of energy I experienced during my awakening. It felt like preparation, strengthening, and grounding.

However, kundalini yoga does not guarantee an awakening. In fact, traditional teachings often emphasize that seeking a peak experience is not the goal, and can be ego driven rather than genuine.  The goal is to be disciplined to the right habits.  Kundalini yoga is a great habit.

With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility & the sad tale of Yogi Bhajan and Guru Jagat.

When people give the power of their practice to one person and that person claims it as their own is the fertile soil for the growth of cult mentality.  Kundalini yoga often leaves practitioners extremely elevated and in a bliss state which can make them very susceptible to suggestions, good or bad.

Yoga Bhajan is credited as bringing kundalini yoga to the west but he is also credited with starting a cult like following and subjecting people to very inhuman practices and lifestyles.  Guru Jagat is also another example where the power of the practice was manipulated and misused.  Feel free to read more about them online if you wish.

When I had my kundalini awakening I was not practicing under any teacher.

Healing as a Co-Creation

One important teaching in my work is that all healing experiences are co created. They are not simply the result of a practitioner doing something magical to a client.

Even the most skilled facilitator is still working with another human being who has their own nervous system, readiness, openness, and inner intelligence.

Most practitioners are not mystical figures on a mountain, although I do not doubt their existence.

Authority and ownership must continue to be given to the experiencer and not the practitioner.

What Is a Kundalini Activation

I attended an online kundalini activation in 2024.

I had been seeing ads on Facebook that showed people writhing and moving on the floor underneath peoples hands and I was ultimately intrigued.

I attended the session, was told to lay down with my camera on so the instructor could see.  The session seemed to consist of playing trance techno music with interludes of light language.  For those of you that don’t know what light language is, it can be very beautiful channeled sounds that don’t actually belong to any earth language.  It comes from the soul.

I did not experience anything during or after the session.  Nor did I experience anything in my life that could have been attributed to that session.  I continue to be skeptical and I want to put forth a word of consideration.

Kundalini already has a bad rap.

I worry about the exploitation of peoples deep desire to have a transcendental experience to ease their suffering. I care so much about this because I actually had a transcendental experience that eased my suffering. Is this desire being exploited and manipulated by group think and theatrics?

I care deeply about my practice and experience and will continue to hold the truth at the forefront of my mission to figure out what is happening, what is real, what other people have experienced and how we can respect the energy and ourselves.

The truth is within me.
