Don't Trade Accountability for Ease

ree

It was the summer of 2020.  I sat on a park bench with my Dad eating Pizza.  We were having a deep conversation about the state of the world, my life, cogs in a system, and how important it was to do a good job no matter what you were doing. I was having a complete existential crisis.

I was desperate for purpose.  Searching for meaning in a world that was making so much noise but very little sense.  I could not find what I was looking for.

It was on this park bench that I decided I would take my yoga teacher training.  It was in that moment my life changed forever.  5 years ago.

I soon realized that the outer world would not have the answers I was looking for and once I began looking within things started to become clearer.  Clear, but in no way easier and quite frankly I did not like what I found inside.

It was dark and messy and there was a lot of work to do.

Now, I know in popular spirituality they are constantly saying to find ease and rest and go easy on yourself, but I think it's also important to highlight how necessary it is to do the hard work.

It's important to go for what you want, to figure out what that Magnum Opus is within and to hold that in sight.  And that takes grit.  It takes not giving up.

It takes 5 years and then some of constant and continual focus.  Of holding the goal in sight.  Of balancing time and energy.  Of inward reflection and awareness.  Of 100% accountability.

Now, you can still be gentle with yourself but be gentle with the best of yourself. Make sure you are not simply giving up because it got hard and the world is offering you really nice fluffy language to tag onto your unwillingness to stay the course.  It’s hard because it's supposed to be hard.

Don’t trade accountability for ease.

Hold yourself to the highest standard because that is the whole point.  Don’t live a half assed life.

Inside each and every one of us sleeps a Soul full of wonder.  Full of past experiences to alchemize so that we get to experience the purest embodiment of ourselves in this lifetime.

Waking up is hard!

Sweeping away the inner cobwebs, facing all the parts of ourselves stored deep within takes effort.

But I promise you, in the darkest room, in the furthest corner, in the bottom of the dustiest chest shines the brightest crystal.  She simply needs to be found, polished and returned to her throne.  This is your light my friends.  It is the gift you get to give to the world.

For this light is the most precious thing on earth and when you shine, you remind others that they shine too,

So do the work.  Take the inner inventory.  What is no longer working for you?  What keeps you from shining your light fully?  You owe it to the rest of the world to find out.

But most importantly you owe it to yourself.
